London Trip Day 1: The Shard

We went to London for a reunion with Karen’s family at the end of June for a week. We stayed in the fantastic London Marriott Hotel County Hall that is on the Thames between Westminster Bridge and the London Eye. The hotel building used to be the county government building. It was very central, with just a short walk across the bridge to Big Ben and the Westminster tube stop, and a walk in the other direction to Waterloo station.

The day after we arrived, we went to the London Fire Brigade Museum for some research Karen was doing, then to the Shard, the tallest building in Europe, to see the sights from the observation deck. It rained that night and the next morning, but we had perfect weather the rest of the trip.

Here is a slideshow of my pictures from the day:

I am sorry to say that the Flickr slideshow uses Flash, so if you have a tablet or can’t see the slideshow, go to http://www.flickr.com/photos/stephenjenks/sets/72157634617510523/

I also took some movies from the Shard:

An unintended video, my camera was recording by accident, but it does show the Shard’s observation deck and the great view.

London Bridge train station is below the Shard. This video shows some trains leaving and approaching.

A fairly large boat sailing past the HMS Belfast as viewed from the Shard observation deck.

Here a boat is going under Tower Bridge, as viewed from the Shard observation deck.

This is one of the boats that are part of London’s public transport, as viewed from the Shard.
